What a deplorable healthcare network for veterans. I am in no way in mental distress, but y’all wonder why 22 A day is a thing, and it’s because when veterans call to set up an appointment with a specialist of any kind they get placed on hold for over 20 minutes or the operator transfers them to the wrong department, and then when you FINALLY get through to a department you can’t get seen for over 3 months. Everyone is so rude and not friendly; yes it’s a generalization, but, 97% of my experiences have been with VA employees who just see us veterans as a number. Don’t even get me started on Female Veteran care. Every Dr is super dismissive of females and their pain. Constantly telling them they can’t possibly be in that amount of pain, or straight up not reviewing patient records and then arguing with their patients about their history. There needs to be a major cultural change in the west haven VA and it has to start from top down.

I am an Air Force veteran Command Flight Nurse. I cannot find the words to adequately describe the care, compassion and professionalism of the caregivers in this hospital. From Primary Care to Urgent Care to Psychiatry to Neurology…I’ve had the very best medical treatment. They keep working, bringing in specialists until they have solved the problem and create a treatment plan. The office personnel and wonderful volunteers also deserve kudos! 10 out of 5 stars! Dr Tokuno in Neurology, EMG, was fabulous, even took me to my car in a wheelchair!
June; I still mean 5 stars, but was very disappointed with the delays and inaction of Dr B in Neurosurgery for 2 appts. He merely said “ your April MRIS are worse than December.” When I asked for a mild pain med, as pain was worse. “No, can’t give you a Rx because I haven’t done a surgical procedure”. Huh? Finally, in tears, i left with my walker. He said “Have a good day.” (!) I finally ended up with an outside consult with “the best spinal neurosurgeon in CT” It was a Dr W who can do robotic surgery. It would have been helpful to know that in March rather than May. It’s likely cauda equina syndrome…robotic surgery which this facility cannot provide. It’s June…hoping for the best!

This rating is specifically for the staff in the ATU department (secretary, nurses and doctors). Understand i moved to another state and haven’t received proper care from my new VA Hospital that I received here. My last resort was calling them for help because I’m getting sicker by the day. This is a special group of people and I am forever grateful for the long distance assist. Remember it only takes one person to care about you. Strongest and sweetest medical team I’ve come across. Thank you so much ATU Team. Your care and passion is not unnoticed.

I do like the idea that the pharmacist works with the medical staff. Just wish the patient advocate and social worker would be a little more helpful and fight for services that a veteran needs.

Im a veteran... The reason why sometimes it takes months to be seen is because of the ridiculous amounts of part time doctors in the hospital... They know how long is the damn wait... If these doctors were full time at one hospital they wait times for appts would be wayyyyyyyy less

They’ve kept me alive for 11 years now, despite my body trying to put me down! Some of the best Doctors and Nurses, in the Nation. Dedication to the Veteran is outstanding!
