Little more than ruins now but in the 19th century, a vital link in the defense of Texas. Fort Lancaster was an isolated post that protected the San Antonio to San Diego mail route. It is also the only Fort to have been directly attacked by Native Americans.

Located a short 11 miles off of I-10 at the Sheffield exit (343) Fort Lancaster is a wonderful opportunity to look back at Texas history. Plan to spend 2 hours to visit the site. The is an excellent visitor's center that explains the significance of the fort.

The staff is very knowable and helpful. For those that need a little help getting around, the park offers a complimentary golf cart. The best time to visit would be in the spring or fall when the temperatures are cooler.

For those who love history, this is a worthwhile stop.

David R.'s knowledge really made our trip better. He filled us in on so many stories and details about the place. It was a fascinating stop. We even had the use of a free golf cart to visit the ruins, which was great as it was a hot day.

Unrestored Fort that is a bit off I-10 but well worth the trip. Small state park that will let you use golf carts to get around. It's definitely walkable but we were crunched on time and the golf cart allowed us to see more.
Make sure when you are done to complete the loop back onto the Interstate, especially if you come in from the west as the views from the top of the Mesa are impressive.

They have golf carts you can drive yourself to visit the fort ruins! Mini-museum is interesting and the facility is really nice. Great photo ops along the way, in either direction.

I enjoy historical forts so this was up my alley. The museum and live presentation were interesting and informative. There are some original foundations and some structural replications. Off the beaten track.

We really enjoyed our trip to Fort Lancaster. The $4 ticket per person includes the use of one of their golf carts to drive around the ruins. So much fun. With the high temperatures, it aloud us to drive by and see all parts of the fort's ruins . I would highly recommend this site and it is worth the short drive off the Interstate.

This place is a true gem. A great stop on that never ending drive in Texas along the 10. There is a visitor's center and some great displays and artifacts. The grounds are good sized and the best part you get to drive a golf cart to explore the fort. Allow about an hour to explore, you could spend more time but it is definitely worth the stop. Will come back next time we drive through.
