The grounds are absolutely beautiful. Loved walking around and exploring the little nature trail. The homes on the property are reserved nicely and very neat to look at! The restroom facilities are very clean. I think this place would be the perfect picnic spot.

The advertising for the Showcase was lacking pertinent information, directional signs were nonexistent, and what signage was there, was hard to read and also lacking information and poorly designed. We drove to Cashiers from Asheville (1.5 hrs) to attend and support the Historical Society and the Designers in the Designer Showcase. We had read an article about it in the Biltmore Beacon. The Beacon gave no address of the home that was being showcased but we headed that way anyway knowing that Cashiers is small and there would surely be directional and advertising signs. The only sign at the main intersection of Main and Broad was difficult to read. It was a beige color background with white lettering (see picture). The sign also did not give any information except a phone number. Unfortunately, there was no cell coverage when we tried to call the number. We then pulled up the location of the Historical Society on our GPS and drove to that location about 5 miles away. We saw a sign for Shuttle Bus pickup in the parking lot. We parked our car and went and stood at the pickup location. There was no office there or ambassador providing any information. After standing there a while with no information as to timing of the shuttle bus, I noticed that someone had written on the dark green “ pickup” sign with a black sharpie, “Volunteer”. We surmised that the shuttle bus must be for Volunteers only. I wish I had taken a picture of the sign to show how impossible that was to see especially from a car! We finally gave up and drove 1.5 hrs back home! We felt sorry for the designers as we’re sure they rely heavily on this event to promote their talents and businesses.

It was closed but we thoroughly enjoyed walking the grounds on our own and reading the posted information. They have the outside Pavillion decorated so nicely. I just loved the nostalgia of it.

I brought guests to CHS on Fri August 23 for 11:00am tour. My group and about 8 other visitors waited till about 11:30am but no one from CHS showed up for tours. A man with a name tag finally showed up, went in the CHS office and then left again; WITHOUT even speaking to any of the obviously waiting visitors. We walked around the grounds and checked again at 12:00pm but still no one there to do a tour. No sign or posting explaining why it was closed on a Friday. Disappointing.

CHS is the finest cultural and historical organization in Cashiers. They restored the original Zachary homes and created a "campus" of museums celebrating Western NC pioneers and builders of "plain furniture," celebrated for its understated perfection. The staff are brilliant folks, fun to learn from, and always pleasant. This place is a treasure.

Participated this morning in the Jane Nardy Ramble. The absolutely best way to get to know Cashiers! Thank you CHS for this event! The Ramble - followed by a perfect Summer Porch Lunch - on the grounds - is always the highlight of the Plateau Summer for me!
