I am a physician and have cared for many residents of assisted living and skilled nursing facilities. When my father's health declined and he was no longer able to live safely in the community, I was very scared about the quality of care we could expect for what we could afford. There are no words to describe how supremely impressed and happy I've been with Brookdale Scotts Valley. When my dad was hospitalized and we were desperately searching for a safe place for him to live, their Assistant Manager (now Executive Director) came in on an off-day to show us the available rooms. When my father later suffered a stroke, the Director of Nursing was a huge support not only for him but for our family as well.

Caring for my aging father is one of the hardest things I've had to do, but Brookdale Scotts Valley gave him an excellent final year. I am so extremely grateful for this community.

I am disappointed in the care my family member receives here. There are staff members who I find very kind and friendly, but my family member does not feel safe here, in part, because of the very long wait times for getting their pendant and emergency wall pulls responded to. (Advertised to be 15 min is often 1-2 hours)
They are also frequently told rather disturbing things about other staff and management from the care team, and many of the care staff complain to my family member about the understaffing/ mismanagement and questionable activities of the facility. My family member is very overwhelmed by hearing such upsetting things on a regular basis from the people who are supposed to keep them feeling safe. I often have to take concerns to multiple people multiple times and often, still nothing is done.
I feel that it’s worth mentioning that I’ve spent 5-10 hours a week in this facility visiting my family member for the last year, so my much of my family member’s experience is also my first hand experience.

Not thrilled with Brookdale. Nationwide chain. I would go with a local facility like Dominican Oaks who has more connection with the community. My mother died from complications of Norovirus at this community 2 months ago. Her Doctor sent us a beautiful orchid and card. Never heard from Brookkdale after we were a resident for over 3 years. All about the money!

And like recent post found out after it all that her pendant wasn’t even working over the time she was there. They never replaced the battery. Maybe she would have been better staying at home with Lifealert?

. There is always help for the residents where help is needed . Housekeeping does a great job. The dining has a very restaurant like vibe which is inviting . Servers are always polite. Activities by Chris are always over the top fun and there is enough variety for everyone. I personally love the art class with Sammy who is very kind and patient.
All staff is very kind and engaging. The director always has an open door policy for the residents and staff which goes a long way.

Our experience with Brookdale is mostly positive. The staff we interact with in daily activities are professional and caring. They truly feel like they care and prioritize my loved ones health and happiness.
However experiences with the higher administration are problematic- they cannot retain high quality staff- there is extremely high turnover. They ignore attempts to share concerns with them, they appears to go out of their way to avoid speaking to or responding issues needing to be addressed. We continually get charged for services they do not and are unable to provide and will not adjust billing to reflect what is actually being provided, to the point where it feels predatory. Beware.

My experience with Brookdale Scotts Valley (formerly Oak Tree Villa) was 99% positive. My mother spent 3 years there and passed away there under Hospice Care at the age of 95. She was well cared for and happy with her living environment. I too was very pleased with the staff's attitude and abilities. Even in my mother's most difficult moments she was treated respectfully and patiently. Besides being supported by the staff at Brookdale she was also well received by the other residents. She had aphasia after her stroke (inability to speak) yet the other residents welcomed her at meals and in the common areas. As an assisted living facility Brookdale is not perfect, no such residence is but it far exceeded my expectations and those of my mother. I would not hesitate to refer a friend or other family member there. Ruth Elliot (the executive director) has done a superb job of hiring and managing since she took over her position. She has set a tone in the "home" of everyone helping each other out that makes Brookdale Scotts Valley a pleasure to live at. They have my thanks and respect for years of caring for my mother. I was there 2-3 times each week over that time period and always happy that my mother was able to live there. Thank you to all that cared for her there, Norman Tardif

Brookdale has been the best possible place for my grandmother to be since she crossed the Century mark! There is genuine care for, and among, the residents. I a m grateful.

Dirty carpeting throughout , not enough staff in dining room. Menu offerings do not reflect food we are served. The best thing we have going for us, is we have Victoria back in maintenance/housekeeping. Watch your billing if you are on auto pay! I hope I won't be penalized for this honest review. We have a new administrator tomorrow. But this Corporate Bottom Line living.
