This museum was recommended to us and so glad it was. We had no idea such a wonderful idea and plan existed during FDR's presidency. So glad they have been able to make this a historic site and save its valuable history for generations to come. The museum is well laid out and tells the story very well with so many photos and visual items which really personalizes the experience. Highly recommend you visit this museum when you are in Crossville. We were on a road trip and found it very interesting.

Cute little place to visit. Lots of great history especially saved right here in the homestead area. Very sweet employee and the gift shop had a lot of neat things to buy. But you've got to make a trip to the top of the tower on a good clear day, especially in the fall when the colors are changing or spring is best. These photos are credit to my girlfriend IG@wander_witch_way who enjoyed the little pieces of history so much herself.

The history of the homesteads and how it got started in very interesting. Makes me appreciate how strong our economy is today regardless what people think because most of us alive today have never really seen hard times. We think because we can't afford a larger house or extravagant vacations that the economy is in shambles. Let me tell you folks, enjoy your lattes and 4000 square ft houses because all things wither away in time.

This is an amazing bit of history in our own backyard, that i had never heard of. Extremely well done local museum, and the host was very informative and helpful. 97 steps to the top of the tower, and a commanding view of the area. Highly recommend.

The history is really interesting. I liked the museum and the staff very friendly. The movie was informative and put together we'll. My only recommendation is to have the house open the same hours as the museum. We couldn't wait until it opened but at least we drove through the neighborhood and got to see the houses from the street.

What an interesting peek into the lives of our forefathers who struggled to make it thru the depression era of this good ole U.S. of A.
F. D. Roosevelt, President of the USA introduced a program called the New Deal to try to help our citizens lift themselves to better conditions by the honest effort of manual labor. The government offered 1 dollar a day to those who wanted to work and they also introduced the option to qualify for a homestead, sponsored by the U.S. government. Many lived in their barn until their homes were finished and sometimes others were allowed to live in a barn until their property was ready. From 2 acres to 30 acres was alloted for each family to work the land and produce enough to live from. The homes were erected from materials that were native to the area. Stone and pine lumber were staples in each dwelling. There were 11 different designs and you may drive atound the area and see many of tbem still being inhabited, today! The project office housed a water tank and you can climb to the top for an awesome view of the area at this location. There were 3 rooms of collections from the original settlers and we were amazed by their presentation and authenticity! If you are near Crossville, Tn and you have an interest in history, you will be very satisfied by this museum!
