Gwinnett History Museum is located in Lawrenceville, the county seat, less than 30 minutes south of Sugar Hill by road.

The museum is housed within a Victorian seminary building completed in around 1830. Before its conversion into the county’s history museum, it was a finishing school that taught the children of the region’s ruling classes.

In addition to this history, the museum covers the earliest days of Gwinnett Country, with displays on the area’s rural economy and the typical textiles stitched by the wives and female children of Gwinnett’s men.

What a very fascinating place full of rich Lawrenceville and Gwinett County history. I learned so many interesting things and left with more than a few nuggets of history. Our tour guide, Tom, was professional and knowledgeable. We had a great discussion of the cotton industry. If you're in the area, make the time to stop in. Next time we're in the area, we'll explore the plantation house next door that the rain kept us from exploring. By the way, the museum was FREE - NO TICKETS REQUIRED!!

It is wonderful to see all these historic buildings restored and placed into context where we can learn something of the rich history of Gwinnett County. Very important in this time as our county commission is working overtime to destroy the history and charm of Gwinnett as they seek to transform Gwinnett into a cookie-cutter California look-a-like, with rampant deforestation, developement - even going so far as to change our county logo into a multi-colored crayon scrawl with no history or meaning behind it, in some misguided attempt to 'be like everywhere else'. It's nice that there are 2 or 3 sites like this that try to actually preserve our history.

I have lived in Gwinnett for almost 20 years and I remember seeing a few log cabins that have been torn down in recent years , having a museum is a great resource to find out what Gwinnett was like in the past centuries.
