A Mostly Excellent ER Experience—With One Sour Note

I visited Independence Hospital’s ER yesterday after my knee, which has been giving me trouble for a while, swelled up with fluid and finally gave out. I couldn’t get in to see an orthopedic surgeon quickly enough, so I came hoping they could drain it and offer some relief.

From the moment I arrived, I was blown away. Check-in was fast, I was in a room quickly, and the staff—from nurses to radiology—were incredibly kind, professional, and attentive. I had great conversations with nearly everyone I encountered. As someone who leads teams in commercial construction, I know what good service looks like—and this was it.

But then came the final interaction.

A young man entered without introducing himself, tossed my discharge papers on the bed, and when I asked about draining the fluid, he turned around, burped in my direction, and said, “Emergency rooms are for life-threatening situations only.” He wrapped my knee in silence and left, slamming the curtain behind him.

It was a jarring end to an otherwise excellent experience. One person’s attitude shouldn’t overshadow the great work of the rest of the team—but it did leave a bad taste.

I’m grateful for the care I received from everyone else. They deserve recognition. I just hope future patients get the same respect all the way through.

To the staff in a whole, thank you so much for your kindness, medical savvy and most of all you care and concern. You were awesome.

PS: if I had read the current reviews I truly believe o would have got my knee drained at another emergency room. It's very important to read reviews first if possible. I let myself down by no doing so.

I recently had an outpatient surgery at Independence Hospital in Greensburg. From the moment I walked in and was greeted by the concierge all the way through to discharge my experience was great. Things moved quickly, the space was clean, every staff member was kind and compassionate. I have had surgeries here before and this time was a noticeable step up and it’s the staff that made the difference.

My dad was hospitalized in the third floor of the Westmoreland hospital, I was so impressed to the lack of bed manners of the nurse, also he was moved from the ER to the third floor and it took almost two hours to get a nurse to come to the room and check on him, he is a heart patient, when I finally found one she was so unpleasant and screaming at him. I asked for another nurse and never came, please do not bring your family to this hospital, the system has changed and the service to the patient is horrendous.

Avoid going to this hospital at all costs Especially if you’re pregnant. They literally put me out in the waiting room while I was miscarrying. Yes, There was a lot of people in the waiting area, but I was literally miscarrying and bleeding profusely to the point where I demanded them to discharge me so I can go somewhere else to get proper care. This hospital needs to hire better staff do better…

Worst experience ever, ended up removing i.v. ambulance folks started at 2pm...by 8pm still had no bag attached to i.v....for person said was so ill low on oxygen took off that,alarm in room goes off but nobody ever comes check..had I been in distress would been dead.!!!!!.shockingly why would ambulance drive me there when I was less 10 min from latrobe hospital...was at urgicare in latrobe across from closed burger king.....don't tell me they don't get $$$ for bringing patient to them...terrible ambulance ride ,then dump me in hallway in Westmoreland independent hospital....please anyone that has more than bump on head do not go to this filthy place..Had pee so bad nurse comes over picks up sheet hands me plastic urinal says this is best can do...wtf I can walk show me bathroom...should left that moment....also took 30 min before noticed I even left.....in 5 hrs saw nurse 1 time,P.A. 1 time.never seen dr.at all....needless say my pcp called antibiotic following day and feel 100% better...Westmoreland was planning on milking my insurance then following day send me on another ambulance ride to presby...what bunch snakes..the c.t.scan guy let it slip saying what's ur hurry ur staying night...oh he'll no I said...lol...as story ends maybe Westmoreland should turn into pet hospital...oh back up not even my pet would take there..shame on u Westmoreland emergency department...by way dr was old as dirt.so not sure if he new he was in hospital.was slow mover..can go on and on....its unbelievable. No food or water in almost 6 hrs.

My fiancee gave birth here. The allowed us to follow our entire natural birth plan and everyone was TRULY helpful. Special shoutout to Megan who was the first nurse in the room and stuck by my fiancee's side. We had a terrible experience at another hospital just days before birthing here, and the difference was night and day. It felt as if we were truly being cared for.

I took my grandson there a couple weeks ago for a bad concussion. He sat in lobby with outbursts of screaming in agony and pain and vomiting for over three hours. We got there around 6 and didn't get called back until after 9:30! He was on the way to bathroom and started throwing up all the front desk person said was does he have a vomit bag, that's all the interaction we got. Maybe asking is ok or showing a little concern might of been nice. They just seem uncaring and ruthless there. Everyone that had already gotten called to back and was leaving kept saying how bad they felt he was still sitting in lobby. Awful experience and I hope to never go back there!

I cannot applaud this hospital enough. Had bariatric surgery and was in short stay for a day and a half. Bret and Stephanie were among the best nurses I have ever met. The people who work at this hospital truly do care about you and want to help all that they can.
