A lovely experience. I stopped by on a whim, and was blown away by the depth of history and hospitality. Shawn Rogers is a font of knowledge - he has historical factoids and anecdotes for every corner of the house and property, and is always eager to share them. His tour gave me a deep appreciation of the house and grounds that I would never have had otherwise. If you are at all interested in local NC history and have an afternoon to spare, I highly recommend.

We had a wonderful time visiting Mendenhall Homeplace. We were especially impressed with the preservation (and heart) that has gone into the details, the little things. My favorite part is Dr. Coffin's house, adjacent to the Mendenhall house, on site. A bit macabre, but fascinating! The Jamestown Historical Society has done an outstanding job maintaining the site and planning lively events to essentially keep the house "alive".

Sean Rogers, the director, gave us a wonderfully informative tour, full of fascinating tidbits and stories! This was one of the best historical tours I've had in a long time... be sure to allow yourself about 2 hours, you won't want to miss anything!

Awesome tour. We simultaneously learned a lot about Quaker history, 19th century building, cooking, and AC, as well as the abolitionist movement and development of the area.

The Mendenhall Homeplace is a fascinating view into the past. The tour is very interesting and gives plenty of facts about the homeplace and the history that it witnessed. There is information about the Underground Railroad, and there is one of the very few documented false-bottomed wagons that you can view in the barn. This is a wagon with a space made under the wagon floor where enslaved persons could hide as they were transported to freedom on the underground railroad. The Mendenhall homeplace is a great place to visit to learn about how life was for the earliest settlers of this area, and on into the nineteenth century.
