Must see art museum in the charming town of Walsenburg! Founders Maria and Brendt are so passionate about art - their enthusiasm is contagious! The 1st floor features regularly rotating art exhibits. Be sure to take a tour of the 2nd floor - a breathtaking, enormous collection of varied art pieces. Make a weekend of it and enjoy drinks at the Crafty Canary Brewery around the corner or pizza/ice cream at Gub Gub’s in the town center. The town is bright and welcoming with murals spread about between shops. Once you visit the Museum of Friends you will want others to visit too!

This is a hidden gem! It is a must see place for anyone interested in contemporary American counterculture art. You could spend days exploring the permanent exhibition on the 2nd floor. And the curators are great storytellers. They personally knew and/or are friends with each artist represented here. If you wanna know what was happening in the American counterculture art in 60s, 70s, 80s and beyond, you should see this place.

This place is AMAZING. The first floor features traveling exhibits which are switched out every few months. The upper floor features a permanent collection and it is mind-blowingly amazing.

It felt like I was swimming in art.

Artists that I have heard of before, and many artists that I have never heard of before. A little local art, and a lot of New York art. You get a little taste of the Colorado communes from the '60s. Loads of fabulous printwork. Sculpture, pencil drawings, ink drawings, mixed media, collage, oils on canvas and other substrates, acrylics, photography, watercolor, even broken glass.

There's also one whole room devoted to Hawaii and Pacific island art and craft, and stepping foot into this room felt like I was catapulted into another world.

I can't believe that this quality, variety, and sheer volume of art is right here in downtown Walsenburg! Absolutely worth your while. You can book a tour through their website. Please be sure to make a monetary donation.

What a breath of fresh air for Walsenburg!
What a terrific place to swing by for an hour or two and look at a very wide range of types of work in their permanent collection and any exhibits they have going on. Currently the exhibits are John Wark's Colorado Wildfires, Camille Seaman's Photographs of Our Polar Regions, Larry Racioppo's Hurricane Sandy exhibit and many more upstairs. What I found most interesting was seeing more history of the area besides more typical things Walsenburg is known for such as mining, the Coalfield, Battle of Walsenburg, etc.
Everyone who works here is fantastic! You see and hear the passion they have for the works on display. Hopefully, Maria is there, and you have extra time to learn about Miners Plaza Park directly across the street from them and whatever else she feels like sharing! In the alley behind their building and the alley behind the other buildings while walking north to Heritage Park are also loaded with art murals that are beautiful.
I'll definitely be returning for another visit.
