Definitely take a guided tour! The lighthouse is Ships Ladders not Stairs. The guides were amazing. They did not rush you and they were very nice. Took as many breaks as you wanted. And they were extremely knowledgeable. I would definitely recommend checking the website for hours and details as the off season you will need to make a reservation. The gentleman that were our guides were AMAZING! It’s free to climb but please try to donate to the lighthouse if you can!

They offer a great free tour (shoutout to Doug!) and tell you all the facts about the lighthouse. They use ships ladders instead of stairs but the climb isn’t bad. There are several volunteers that climb with you and you can stop and rest or go down at any point. At the top, you can walk around for a 360 degree view of the island. Highly recommend and will not forget!

Wait - we did have to wait a few minutes because we had a large group but once we were all there, they started right away.

Tickets - I would recommend making a reservation ahead of time, especially if you have a large group like we did.

Some of us locals climbed the Oak Island light house yesterday. It was built in 1957. Inside there are seven ship's ladders that rise to the top. The 3 colors are mixed in the concrete, reducing the need to paint. The builders poured a 12" vertical circle and let it dry. They put in steel rebar as they poured. Then they poured another and let it dry. Layer upon layer until they reached the top. It's 153 feet hight, The foundation is constructed of 24 concrete-filled steel pilings 10- 3/4" in diameter and 67 feet in the ground. Take the time to do this. The view from the top is worth it!

Not quite what we were expecting. Guess we are more accustomed to seeing larger lighthouses with innkeeper quarters, large windows, etc. like in northern Michigan and Ohio. There is very little parking; only short term and no restrooms or port a potty nearby. We found out when we got there that you need to make a reservation in advance to request a tour. The beach, however is AMAZING and we visited in March so there were very few tourists to contend with. We also really enjoyed the educational bulletin boards posted along the boardwalk to the beach.
