Excellent museum and walking trail. Gentleman at the front desk is very personable and knowledgeable. A very well-maintained, walkable trail. I would watch out for steep drop-offs in some areas though. Artifacts and information regarding the history of the canal, affiliation with the Underground Railroad, boats and typical cargo is well-organized and neatly presented. Great for children. I recommend it.

I love and also struggle with this trail. Some parts are boring a few are awesome. I have turned back at times struggling up and down hill with my dog on leash on bike. I have always gotten a work out. I have never been able to complete the trail but hope to do that one time by myself without my dog. I do not recommend trying to start the trail at the boat ramp that being said you should definitely go down there and see it and maybe even check out The distillery. Check out river road access. For a challenging nature outing it's great. Be prepared to cross paths with others. Dog friendly. If you start the trail at the museum be prepared to cross the road. There is an amazing mural there.

Ein kleines, sehr informatives Museum. Sehr nette Leute die sich sehr bemühen. Alle Fragen werden ausführlich beantwortet. Das Museum ist auch für Kinder sehr geeignet. Es gibt viele Stationen mit kleinen Experimenten. Die Videos sind gut gemacht. Hier kann mdd as n die Geschichte von der Kanalschifffahrt, zur Eisenbahn bis heute erleben. Wir waren eine Gruppe von 10 Personen und es hat uns sehr gefallen. Leider gibt es für Senioren keine Ermäßigung.

Hike the trail from museum to the dam. About 3 miles up and back. Trail was hard packed dirt/gravel. Mostly flat and easy to hike. Most of the trail is covered by trees. Good for bringing your dog.

We are at Lake Gaston for vacation. We wanted to take a short walk after dinner in Roanoke Rapids, & this is a good place for that. The museum was closed when we got there, so I can't talk about that...except that it is well maintained on the outside. We were impressed that there is a bike loan program available! My hubs walked the trail to the dam the weekend before & said it is mostly shady & has enough rises & falls to give you a healthy walk.

This is a terrific museum to stop at and an excellent trail to hike! The museum has a great assortment of artifacts about the history of Roanoke Rapids and the importance of the are during the earliest days of settlement. We hiked the entire trail with BSA Troop 11 from Goldsboro, NC. We needed a nice 15 mile hike that could be done in a day for the Hiking merit badge, and this trail checked all the boxes. It's perfectly suited for a leisurely hike as there are several points of entry, or excellent to hike from one trail head to the next. The trail is very well maintained and has a lot of scenic value and historical points of interest. I can't recommend it enough.

The Roanoke Rapids Canal Museum and trail has many traditional and interactive exhibits. The canal system is nearly 200 years old and was developed to provide a source of water to generate electricity. On February 26, 1909 Roanoke Rapids Paper Manufacturing Company produced the first sulphate processed "Kraft Paper" in the United States. The museum is expertly laid out and managed. They provide a bicycle loaner program to explore the 7.8 mile trail or hike with maps provided and also offer guided programs. This place is on the National Register of Historic Places.

This is a beautiful trail to walk. I have walked my dog here several times and it is always peaceful. There are no streetlights so I recommend going in the daytime. The Roanoke River is visible on some spots and it makes for a great scene. The trail is never busy and always plenty of space for walking, biking, or having a picnic. I enjoyed the picnic tables that are about 1/2 mile in. Great place to sit and take a rest. Great history to read about on parts of the trail. The trees give the trail plenty of shade for some cooler areas in the warmer weather. Great views for a rural area! Highly recommend going here for a relaxing walk. Also super cool bridge made from the back of an 18 wheeler.
