This musem is truly a gem in SF! It's housed in an original building from the beginnings of the city, and is filled with wonderful items (including a special limited time exhibit on the poet Ferlinghetti). Highly recommend spending some time here if you are interested in San Francisco's history - on Saturday afternoons they have docent tours too, for a more in-depth experience. A great stop if you're downtown or on your way to Chinatown and North Beach. 🙂

I thoroughly enjoyed my recent visit on a quiet afternoon. I was alone in this small museum, but found plenty to interest me for the better part of an hour. I’m, admittedly, a SF history fan, but I think a casual visitor will find something of interest. Also, Commercial St. is a wonderful way to stroll up to Chinatown.

I just wanted to say thank you for having me on Shawn's Unspeakable Vices tour, it was phenomenal, one of the best tours I have ever gone on! Shawn is an incredible tour guide and really knows how to relay the information.

This review is not about the museum, but The Society’s walking tour that they offered; Unspeakable Vice, with guide Shawn. It was a lovely 90 minute walking tour which we would recommend doing. He was knowledgable and friendly and personable as a tour guide, and gave us new information about the history of the queer neighbourhood in San Francisco prior to the Castro. Definitely worth checking out.

Small SF history museum with a few exhibits and artifacts. The day we went, there were the permanent historical exhibits, one on Theater in SF and another on Irish Dance. A set of wings from Angels in America was on display, along with other theater memorabilia. Free to enter.

I was shooed away from sitting on these steps by two museum security guards in suits. What an inviting place!

I walked past the Mint and it’s open on Saturdays to the public and free. SF Historical Society now is in the building operating a museum. Check it out. Worthy of a visit.
