I am re-publishing my review as I was recently hospitalized here for two days in 5 South. I was transported to the main hospital from the Harrison Crossing ED after it was discovered that I had a partial bowel obstruction and may possibly need surgery.

Immediately upon transport, I was placed in a bed on 5 South (gen surgery unit) and met the nurses. The first night was a bit difficult because doctors, nurses, CNAs, lab techs, and other staff came into my room to take vitals or blood—but I expected this since I had a potentially serious acute condition.

I also met surgical team PAs/MDs throughout my stay who were very knowledgeable and supportive. I appreciate Alexis and her team from General Surgery. She (and her colleagues) was very polite and helpful. The hospitalists were outstanding and checked on me daily.

I did run into some issues time and time again, but I empathize that the unit during my stay was busy. My only major complaint is that the kitchen/cafeteria was no longer taking calls when I tried to order dinner at 6:30PM, whereas they close at 7, so I missed dinner one night. However, the nurses gave me snacks so I wouldn’t go hungry.

Finally, I would like to personally thank Monique, Kieran (?), Jazzmine, Trinh, and many of the nurses/doctors/housekeeping staff on the unit who provided me with so much patience, support, and compassion. It was difficult at times, but they truly made my stay more pleasant.

Overall, this hospital seems to mostly care about its patients. But there needs to be more reform on nurse:patient ratios and to provide more options on mealtimes. Otherwise, kudos!!

My mother is 87 and she was extremely ill and before I left for the night there were changes made to her care. Due to the changes I called to speak to her nurse to ease my mind that she was doing okay. The first time her nurse said he was too busy to speak to me which is fine I understand completely. I waited over an hour to call back and asked to have a moment of his time and again he told me no he was too busy he would have to call me back I said okay and he said “well it’s gonna be an hour or two” which again I said that is fine I would wait for his call this was around 8:30 ish. I sat waiting and the call never came and I fell asleep. I asked the next day to please not put him back in charge of care for my mother as I just felt if I needed to speak to someone out of respect I would get a call back and I did not make a big deal about it.
The next evening as we waited for the turn team to come in this nurse came up to the doorway and stopped to loudly tell the turn team he was not aloud in her room that the family got all upset because he told them he would call them back but he didn’t and how it was ridiculous and how some families are just like that. Then he said you know some nurses around here are just too accommodating! He then turned and walked away leaving these two young women to come in and reposition my mother. I was very nice to them as was my mom and when we were out the door you guessed it I stood there just to hear my mother say do you come in every two hours and the response she got was well We don’t do this out of malice. She was not implying they did she was simply asking a question!!! My husband had me Continue out of the hospital and then call up to the charge nurse because he knew that I was livid and I probably would’ve gotten ugly. At first the charge nurse said in his defense, he was busy last night and I explained to her, but I wasn’t mean and I understand he was busy, but there’s no excuse. Anyway, I say all this to say that just be careful for when you can’t be there at night if you feel in your gut, the person is wrong for your loved one have them change it.
Let me say this however the other nurses and staff members including the Doctors were 5 stars. It was clean and everyone else was amazing.
